Art Workshops With Agustina Diez Sierra
For those who love travel, culture, and design, combine your interest through Connection: Art, a 10-day design workshop in the Philippines lead by world-traveled artist Agustina Diez Sierra.
Your experience will start with a journey through the streets of Manila, the epicenter and gateway to the islands. Don’t let the busy and frenetic pace fool you. Underneath it all is a city full of rich culture, architecture, and a storied history waiting to be revealed. Imagine traveling the streets and exploring local markets to experience the food, crafts, and people of this vibrant city. Agustina will guide you through the open-air markets where stalls stretch as far as the eye can see. The rich native textures—spools of silky clothe, stacks of hand-woven baskets and straw hats, and rows of intricate crafts, will tantalize you.
Hop on a tricycle or the infamous jeepney to get an up close view of the many unique neighborhoods that make up the metropolitan area. From the historic Spanish colonial district to the vendors that line old Manila to the modern day business districts filled with skyscrapers and high fashioned boutiques, you’ll experience the history, culture, and differences of the past and present day Filipino.
You’ll then take a journey to the southern islands of the Philippines to explore a different paced world filled with natural beauty. Welcome to the island life, where children play freely through the streets and the cockle of a rooster replaces the sound of horns. Think of a place where time stands still and old world traditions are passed on from generations past. During this time, you will connect with local villagers, tribesmen and artisans learning about their culture, crafts and trade. Here you see how materials and natural resources are crafted, carved, colored and created into intricately beautiful and sustainable works of art. Through this hands-on experience, you’ll absorb the meaning behind the local artisans’ work. Learn what the colors, patterns, textures and design represent within different cultural circles while connecting with the local teacher who offer side-by-side guidance.
By the end of the workshop, you will chose two to three artifacts to hang in a show back in America. These items will be displayed in the Connection Philippines Workshop opening in Chicago. The best part about this is you won’t have to worry one bit about the setup. The Connection founders will handle the logistics, allowing you to share and enjoy what you’ve captured. This allows you to connect with other artists and become part of a community of creators, ensuring your growth will continue long after you’ve returned.
Our 10-day dance retreat will culminate in an all out dance party with our guides, new dance friends, and teachers celebrating the connective experience.
